Turbo Grafx-16 Thank You for Trying – Today in Retro Gaming – August 19th, 1989

When NEC announced the Turbo Grafx-16 the press was abuzz with anticipation.  Up till this point in recent years it was clearly Nintendo holding the power of gaming in their hands.  Sega was just a meddling second placer fighting it out with Atari and their 7800 console (it was not much of a fight at […]

R-Type III Super Nintendo

R-Type III Third Lightning Blows Up Super Nintendo – August 2nd, 1994 – Today in Video Game History

The Super Nintendo was known for slow down when trying to put a lot of action on the screen. This was most apparent in scrolling shooters (horizontal and vertical) such as Gradius III. By the time R-Type III Third Lightning came around developers pretty much had the SNES hardware figured out. The Super Nintendo was […]

Keith Courage in Alpha Zones TurboGrafx-16

Keith Courage Earns Packin Rights on TurboGrafx-16 – August 19th, 1989 – Today in Video Game History

This was NEC’s answer to Altered Beast, Keith Courage in Alpha Zones. There is no arcade tie-in here (though the TurboGrafx-16 did launch with R-Type). NEC was at a disadvantage as far as arcade ports went. That didn’t stop them from trying different things such as a pinball game at launch. Keith Courage in Alpha […]

New Game: R-Type 128K for the Amstrad CPC Does Port Better than Official Game

The Amstrad CPC did receive an official port of R-Type many years ago. To say it was lacking is an understatement. For one, the official port did not have a soundtrack (a big no-no in a scrolling shooter) and it was bogged down with slow down and lack of color (just look at the comparison […]
