Naddando is an interesting release for a couple reasons. For one, we do not see this genre supported all that often. Run and gun war games have been left on the waysides as of late.

July 2nd, 2016
Carl Williams Remember R-Type, Gradius, Darius and Thunder Force? Sure you do. So does Breaking Byte Games who are making a homage to those classics called Xydonia. Xydnonia is not simply a game that “feels” like those classics or has an enemy or two inspired by those games. No, this is a tour de force challenger for […]
New Game: X-Force Reminds Gamers that the Commodore 64 Can Rock Scrolling Shooters
November 8th, 2014
Carl Williams Side scrolling shooters. A genre that used to rule the roost in gaming, no matter what platform you gamed on, there was probably more than a handful of side scrolling shooters (unless it was a 3DO, CD-i or Playdia that is). From the likes of Nemesis II on the Game Boy to Thunder Force III […]
Thunder Force II Brings Arcade Quality Scrolling Shooter Action to Sega Genesis – August 14, 1989 – Today in Video Game History
August 14th, 2014
Carl Williams Scrolling shooter fans were well served with the Sega Genesis and right out of the gate they got Thunder Force II from Sega/Technosoft. Thunder Force II would have been at home in the arcades if it was released there. Interestingly, Sega really covered several genres with the launch of the Genesis. The only missed obvious […]
Kickstarter: Gryphon Knight Epic Looks to Re-Invigorate 2D Side Scrolling Shooters (Think Phelios Folks)
August 5th, 2014
Carl Williams Okay, side scrolling shooters used to rule the roost back in the 16-Bit days. It seemed like we could not go more than a day or two without having a friend tell the tale of a new 2D, either side or overhead, scrolling shooter coming out for a platform of the day (counting hand held […]
Toon Shooters 2 Freelancers Review, Scrolling Shooting Fun-ning
July 4th, 2018
Carl Williams I suck at scrolling shooters. While I love them, they don’t love me back. This is mainly the classics though. Titles like Last Resort (Neo Geo exclusive), Thunder Force III, U.N. Squadron, etc. They all eat my lunch and rub my face in the dirt. Even back in the day, my younger days is what […]
Scramble is a New Side Scrolling Homebrew Shooter for the Atari 2600
November 17th, 2015
Carl Williams The Atari 2600 was no stranger to 2D side scrolling shooters. We saw a few iconic ones released on the console. Defender being the most popular that I can think off the top of my head. While the Atari 2600 was not exactly designed for this type of game, developers were still able to make […]
Raiden Trad Brings Classic Vertical Scrolling Arcade Title to Sega Genesis – September 7th, 1991 – Today in Video Game History
September 7th, 2020
Carl Williams Raiden Trad, short for Raiden Tradition, is the name given to some home ports of the classic arcade shooter. I am not sure why they did this, but it is what it is. Released by Micronet, Raiden Trad certainly continued the strong Sega Genesis home arcade ports tradition. There were a few changes but that […]
Classic Gaming Platforms New Gaming Experiences – Shooter Edition
March 28th, 2019
Carl Williams Today the scrolling shooter is not all that mighty but back in the day, man, you could measure the power of a platform by the scrolling shooters released for it. For years Thunder Force III was the game, at least in my neck of the woods. Other classics I have fond memories of include Space […]
