Mortal Kombat is a franchise that has reached maximum exposure, so to speak. Millions know the name, enjoy the various properties the franchise has to offer, and some of those fans go farther. One such fan that knows no limits has decided to take on a major challenge. Hugo Smits is creating a Nintendo Game Boy Advance port of Mortal Kombat 2. On top of that, they are using their own tools to create the port. What has been released so far is impressive.
Mortal Kombat 2 was a powerful release
Hitting arcades in 1993, Mortal Kombat 2 was the sequel to the smash hit, Mortal Kombat. Midway were on a rare roll as arcade releases were not often recipients of sequels. This was the next chip at the armor that Capcom put on with Street Fighter 2, and its myriad minor updates.
Midway continued to capitalize on the allure of digitized graphics for this sequel. It was a formula that helped capture the attention of arcade gamers once, why not try again. It would not be until around Mortal Kombat 4 that Midway would introduce the first main series release to not feature digitized characters.
Mortal Kombat 2 also offered something the first game was missing. Combos. It is hard to believe now that a company would have ever released a fighting game without combos. Back in the day though, it was common. Even after Capcom released Street Fighter 2, some companies had not caught onto that small detail.
As they say, the Devil is in the details. Combos and little things like that were part of the charm SF2 offered fans. Midway would later go overboard with this with the Killer Instinct franchise but that is not for this article.
Coming to a pocket near you
Right now, Mortal Kombat 2 for the Game Boy Advance is in Beta. The developer has released a download for those interested. If there is enough fanfare for this, they have plans to finish the port.
