Crazy Columns is a fan remake of the popular Sega game, Columns. Sega needed a puzzle game to take on Nintendo’s exclusive license of Tetris. While Columns never reached the popularity level that Tetris did, Sega was able to create a puzzle franchise that still sees updates today. Fans and official updates are seen regularly for Columns. Crazy Columns is a fan project that has just been updated for the Commodore Amiga 500.
Falling blocks by any other name
Columns was unique in how the falling blocks interacted. Unlike Tetris, there were no empty squares on the screen. Pieces fell in sets of three and you can rotate them vertically. This means no horizontal flipping.
After pieces completed their journey to the bottom of the screen, they would react to nearby pieces. Sets of three would explode and be removed from the screen, allowing the blocks above to fall and fill the space. If more matches were made those too would be removed, causing massive chains.
The key to getting high scores in Columns was to perform as many combos as possible. In some versions of Columns you play against another player or the computer.
