A vintage classic from 1999 is undergoing a complete remake. This treat for lovers of the genre was announced in the summer of 2020 by two partners. Dotemu, the French publisher whose mission is to revive retro games on modern platforms, has teamed up with developer Triskell Interactive. They are working to bring back “the best historical city builder up today”, as enthusiastically dabbed by Steam. Some classics never go out of fashion, as experienced gamers know well. When you are a fan of the spinning wheel, for example, you know that with casino online offers you can never go wrong. When you want to become a true Pharaoh and build your monumental city on the Nile banks, the Dotemu team is the one to follow.
What is new with the New Era development? Things have been quiet for months, until the 2021 spring edition of AG French Direct. This ActuGaming event promotes French productions with the goal to put French-speaking creators under the limelight through an online presentation. The organizers took the opportunity to ask Théophile Noiré, Triskell Interactive’s co-founder, about the progress of Pharaoh. Noiré is the de facto creative director of the project, although his role has never been officially defined.
There is no release date yet, but Triskell is “in a hurry” to respect the promise to deliver the finished product somewhere in 2021. The original Pharaoh dates back to 1999 when it was published by Impressions Games and Sierra Entertainment. The game allows a player to build his city stone by stone and manage everything that makes up its everyday life (economy, agriculture, culture, education, religion, health, etc.). In other words, playing implies become a true leader, a 360-degree active and reigning Pharaoh.
According to Théophile Noiré, Pharaoh is the most complex and complete in a series of city builders that Impression Games developed at the end of the Nineties. They also explored the world of antique Roman and Greek cities. Triskell Interactive chose Egypt because it is the ancient civilization that most inspires them. The other partner, the Paris-based videogame publisher Dotemu is passionate about “retrogaming”. The studio was founded in 2007 with a mission to give the best games from the past a new lease of life. They have developed and published more than fifteen titles on console, PC and mobile, in search of the perfect balance between nostalgia and modern expectations. In practice, give every gamer access to yesteryear’s classic video games on today’s platforms.
Respecting the game’s original spirit is paramount to the success of these operations. The modern remake of Pharaoh is just one such challenge. The gameplay of the original is being maintained, Noiré explains, because its structure is extremely complex, with several interdependent subsystems. The original edition had established a balance which at that time defined a whole genre. Triskell Interactive felt that it was pointless to add stuff just for the sake of adding it. They are instead concentrating on accessibility, options, and balance. On top of that, a complete graphical overhaul will maintain the 2D isometric perspective of the original, but with new hand-drawn characters, buildings, and environments. Modern 4K monitors will make it shine for the joy of passionate retrogamers.
