Spyro Year of the Dragon Sees Insomniac Say Goodbye on PlayStation – October 24th, 2000 – Today in Video Game History

Spyro Year of the Dragon PlayStation

Spyro Year of the Dragon on the Sony PlayStation was the end of a fantastic trilogy. One that many gamers would argue that should have staid a trilogy. What Insomniac did on the PS One is simply astounding. Each entry was better than the previous and set a new high watermark for the competition. A high watermark that few met. Thankfully, gamers the world over can enjoy the remake of the Spyro franchise on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, one region missed out on the original entry, at least domestically.

There is a story worth paying attention to

I am not going to reiterate the whole story of Spyro Year of the Dragon here. Suffice to say, it is good, has a few turns, and is interesting. You will also be introduced to new characters, both friend and foe, as well as new modes to play. Insomniac did a great job here in the third entry – SNK should take note.

You control a dragon and must take on saving the world again. Over the course of 37 worlds you must collect the required number of eggs and defeat bosses. Along the way new characters join you to help, and some hinder, you with your quest.

Spyro Year of the Dragon was a great ending

By the time Insomniac got to the third entry in the Spyro franchise, they had this done pat. They were able to eek out performance from the aging PlayStation hardware that was above and beyond the competition. Control was tight, levels were designed exceptionally well, and the game featured familiar enough characters. Pretty much the Nintendo formula – expand your franchise only as needed with each new entry.

That is not to say Insomniac were lazy here. No, it was quite the opposite. Year of the Dragon was simply amazing when released, it still holds up amazing today. Use an emulator to enable higher resolution and frame rates to see even more amazing details. Please legally purchase a copy of the game though, no one likes pirates unless Sid Meier is involved.

Insomniac were just beginning to grow

This is the company that went onto create Ratchet and Clank on the successive PlayStation platforms. Spyro Year of the Dragon set the wheels in motion for Insomniac to go do bigger, better, things. They did just that.
