Metal Gear from Konami is one of those franchises that sold consoles. Sure, on the Nintendo Entertainment System that may not be the case but later, oh yeah. Who had friends that bought a PlayStation console to play Metal Gear Solid? This is an iconic franchise. One that more gamers need to play. Now, thanks to joining the GoG.com platform, more gamers can. There are benefits to Metal Gear joining this platform.
Not the NES version
First up, the first game in the franchise, Metal Gear. Before you get upset, this is not the Nintendo Entertainment System version. No, this is the MSX version of the game that the butchered NES version was based on.
This version is much more mature and challenging. If you are expecting a tutorial walking you through everything, look elsewhere.
MGS with improvements
One thing that sets GoG.com apart from other digital stores is the extras. GoG goes above and beyond often with releases. This could be scans of physical items, patches already applied, etc. That is exactly what they did with MGS.
Metal Gear Solid features a lot of tweaks to make it work on modern PC’s. They also were able to include the VR missions disc content and other things.
Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance plus extras
Metal Gear Solid 2, according to GoG members, is mostly the vanilla 2002/2003 release. There are some changes to make it run on modern PC’s though. Also, there are 350 VR missions included as well as 150 alternative missions.
It appears this version also features DLC and expansion material.
Why being on GoG matters
For those that do not know, GoG does not add unnecessary DRM to their releases. This means you own the product, just like the good old days. This is the opposite of other digital stores in operation.
If you want to support digital releases that respect your rights then choose GoG. If you prefer physical, buy from Amazon. Cannot get enough MG, we understand.
