Naddando is an interesting release for a couple reasons. For one, we do not see this genre supported all that often. Run and gun war games have been left on the waysides as of late.
Naddando calls on classic arcade games
It is quite evident that Naddando is calling on Capcom’s classic Commando game. From the font used for the title screen to the scenery, similarities abound. This could also be attributed to the standardization of war. It is hard to differentiate when everyone is drawing on the same source materials.
Unlike Commando, you are moving horizontally here instead of vertically. That is quite a departure and a design choice we have not seen used often in this genre. Even Super C on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) used vertical scrolling for overhead levels.
Adapt, overcome, conquer
According to Indie Retro News, Naddando uses the Shoot Em Up Construction Kit (SUECK). An engine which was not made to make run and gun style games. Naddando sees you moving left and right on the screen taking out enemies. This is different than Capcom’s classic Commando which was a vertical run and gun.
SUECK games often have a similar feel to them which is why Naddando is so interesting. It is a complete departure, for the most part, from the norm. While most games using this engine focus on a vehicle of some sort, you are on foot here. The levels do not auto scroll either, like other SUECK games.
What is here is interesting and for fans should be a lot of fun. Check it out, there is a free ROM download available. There are apparently plans for a small physical run of the game for those interested.
Know of some cool Commodore 64 games out there? Let me know in the comments below. I love hearing about new games for classic platforms.
