Arkagis Revolution proves the Sega Genesis has plenty of tricks up its sleeve. Well, the 68000 CPU that powers the console does anyhow. Remember all the hype around Mode 7 when Nintendo announced the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)? Remember how Sega’s answer to that hype was to release a new add-on, the Sega CD, rather than focusing on software solutions? Well, apparently, they could have done this in software all along. For proof, check out Arkagis Revolution by Sik. Available now in digital and physical, boxed, editions. I love that.
An interstellar story
It is the year 2612, humanity has reached out into the stars and started exploring. For better or for worse, humans have begun colonizing other planets. Earth is no longer their crib protecting the rest of the universe from human temper tantrums.
The nation of Arkagis has held power like a dictator for decades. The United Space Colonies (USC) cannot have this. An army is sent to free Arkagis from its dictatorship.
The USC is not holistically doing this for others though. It quickly becomes clear that the USC want Arkagis for themselves. The people of Arkagis will not stand for a second dictatorship to come in. Via a secretly developed ship, the Arkagis rebels fight back.
You are piloting that ship.
Arkagis Revolution brings Mode 7 to Sega Genesis
Well, not technically. Arkagis Revolution brings Mode 7 style effects to the Sega Genesis. For me, that is close enough. This is impressive considering the hardware. It is all done in software because you can buy a digital download of this. Kind of hard to send add-on chips over the Internet. That whole 3D printing thing is not exactly mainstream yet.
What you get when you buy Arkagis Revolution is an overhead vehicle-based action game. There are tunnels, rooms, and large areas to explore. Along your way you take on enemies such as giant spiders.
Technical prowess
The screen is not full screen by any means – there are information bars on both sides. That does not stop Arkagis Revolution from being impressive. Rotation is full speed and smooth.
For those wanting to make speed run videos, there is a timer available. Cutscenes have voice acting and are done quite well. Arkagis Revolution also supports 60Hz and 50Hz displays making it region free.
According to Indie Retro News, Arkagis Revolution features support for 3 and 6 button controllers. It also allegedly supports mouse and keyboard controls (I assume only the digital version there).
Head over to their Itch.io page to grab your copy of Arkagis Revolution in digital format. Head to their website to purchase a boxed copy for your Sega Genesis.
