Verge World is an upcoming voxel-based 3D shooter for the Sega Genesis and Commodore Amiga. Interestingly, this is the first voxel-based game for the Sega Genesis. For those wondering, this title shares a similar view to Nintendo’s Star Fox. The difference is the graphics.
Verge World uses new tech on Genesis
While on computers voxels are more common, they are still lacking in gaming. I can think of a few flight simulators that used voxel engines. I believe the first Outcast game, an adventure title, used them as well. That is about it for voxels in gaming that I can think of.
A quick look at the Wikipedia for voxels reveals lots of games used them sparingly. Later Command & Conquer, Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri, and Ion Fury use voxels for smaller details.
Verge World will be the first-time voxels are used on the Sega Genesis console though. I may be wrong on that, and I am sure someone will let me know if so.
Depth and special relation are great
One thing that you will notice about Verge World is the depth of 3D and environment. There are hills, walls, splits requiring choosing a path, and the world reacts to your movement. That last statement just means the graphics adjust based on where you are in the world. Remember how Silpheed on the Sega CD was basically a Full Motion Video game with sprites on top? Yeah, Verge World is far from that.
At the moment there is a playable demo available for those rocking Commodore Amiga’s (or emulators).
The developers have stated they have gotten great results on the Sega Genesis version. Unfortunately, there are no pics or footage available of that version yet. When it is released, I will make sure to update everyone.
