Goldeneye 25, a fan remake of the Nintendo 64 Goldeneye 64 game, has been shut down. The news first broke earlier this week that MGM/Danjaq have shut the fan project down. This is sad news but, honestly, it is inevitable. The fans obviously did not obtain a license to use the James Bond characters.
Goldeneye 25 is no more
Gamerant.com reported about Goldeneye 25 on August 12th. The news was broke on Yannick Zenhäusern’s YouTube channel in a six minute video. Zenhäusern went into detail that a lot of material used in their fan remake could live on, minus the James Bond content.
Around the 3 to 3:30 minute mark, Zenhäusern states that they will be removing all James Bond content. Part of the reason mentioned is generally lack of interest based on MGM’s response to the project.
While the sentiment is understandable, surely everyone realized a Cease and Desist was coming.
This does apparently open the project to console ports and more.
I covered Goldeneye 25 earlier this year. The general feeling of a looming C&D was almost palpable.
Now known as Project Ianus
The team will apparently continue to work on their project. While Goldeneye 25 is dead, the new game called Project Ianus is born.
The new game will still use Unreal Engine 4. This means the game will still potentially look great – just minus a familiar license. There is a serious lack of information on this new game. For now, we just must accept that a new game is coming from the ashes of the Goldeneye 25 attempt.
What other fan remake projects do you know about that other fans would like? Let me know in the comments. I just might feature it in a future article.
For now, goodbye Goldeneye 25, we barely knew you. We will have to live with memories of the Nintendo 64 game. Maybe this will make MGM realize there are fans for this style of game. Maybe not.
