Billy Masters Was Right is a callback to the classic LucasFilm title Maniac Mansion. When pulling on that kind of pedigree you better have a good game. While a final verdict is yet to come, I can safely say, fans of the genre will love this one. The graphical style, text overlay, etc are all pulling on those nostalgic strings. In a good way, I might add.
Billy Masters Was Right gets it right
First, Billy Masters Was Right uses the Adventure Game Studio (AGS). This means all that messy code underneath is taken care of. That leaves developer Postmodern Adventures free to focus on the story and graphics.
We all remember classics like Maniac Mansion (Indie Retro News pegs the release year at 1987), the Space Quest series, King’s Quest series, Police Quest series, etc. One major reason is they all had great story lines. Billy Masters Was Right is no different.
Inspiration from other media
What is cool about Billy Masters Was Right is where it pulls inspiration from. It is not trying to be a Maniac Mansion sequel, prequel, or anything of the sort. Instead, it is pulling a familiar art style to tell a new story.
Inspiration comes from movies like The Burbs and Disturbia. There is weird stuff going on in Billy’s town and he feels it is his job to solve the mystery.
Unfortunately, Billy is stuck being grounded over some stuff he said to a teacher. Billy also faces a drug use stigma that may or may not be true.e
Billy hears about a psycho killer in the neighborhood. Obviously, someone up to no good. While doing his chores he notices a vehicle that matches what the psycho is driving parked next door. This is odd and Billy feels the neighbors are in danger.
How will you solve this mystery, clear Billy’s name, and prove to the world that Billy Masters Was Right?
