Today in 2003 – Bioware was battling deadlines and the expectant retaliation of fans of the Star Wars universe. The release of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) was a big move. They were also battling the stigma that licensed games simply did not live up to expectations. Cross genre titles are also not known for being able to set the world on fire. Bioware pulled off a magnificent feat – KOTOR was actually good.
In a galaxy far away
KOTOR is set several thousands of years prior to the original movies in the Star Wars universe. KOTOR allowed Bioware a little more freedom than most licensees are given with the Star Wars material. While maintaining the “key” elements of Star Wars (it isn’t an SW game without light sabers for instance), KOTOR brought along a healthy dose of light sabers, star ships and evil enemies out to end your Jedi career as soon as possible.
Knights of the Old Republic divided fans
Gameplay was divided, much like most RPG’s, into two parts, talking and fighting. The significant difference here is the effects of your choices in the talking section. This can affect how your character develops. It also dictates if he/she is good or evil (which can affect the battles you face).
A great starting point
I came into KOTOR blind. Sure I had watched the original trilogy of movies, though not enthralled with the universe they created, I liked it. Loading up KOTOR for the first time, it was rather interesting. Not to mention not that easy without a hint book. Though, honestly, it wasn’t that hard, other than not really knowing the “other” outcome to decisions being made.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic stands as one of the best games based on the Star Wars universe and a testament to letting developers just do their jobs.
