Fastball is a new Vextrex baseball game. For those that do not know about the Vectrex console it was a special platform from the early 1980’s. Those that own one love it. While independent homebrew is not as popular for this platform as it is on others, the Vectrex holds its own. This baseball game is proof of that.
Fastball basics of baseball
Fastball does not feature a full-on game of baseball. Instead this is a Home Run Derby style game. That means you are just blasting balls out of the park or trying to. No having to worry about running bases or anything.
This style of game was popular in arcade machines placed in bars, clubs, and bowling alleys. The game play is simple, easy to master, and can be fun in short bursts. Exactly right for an area that is focused on turning over customers regularly. It would be easy to order some food and play a few rounds of something like Fastball while you wait.
Longevity may suffer
If you are looking for a full baseball experience on your Vectrex console, then do not look here. Fastball is one mode and only one mode.
You can play against the computer in Arcade mode or against another person in a versus mode. The Arcade mode features a timer so find that sweet spot to win.
Fastball will be available soon over on the 8bitwaves.com website. They have one game, Beluga Dreams, available and another in development, Demons. Both are for the Vectrex console along with Fastball.
Their website seemingly has not been updated since last year. Gameplay of Fastball is available on their YouTube channel though. This footage was posted in late June 2020, so work is continuing for their baseball game for the Vectrex.
