Ultracore is one of those long-lost treasures that gamers gave up on. This happens quite a bit in the video game world. Companies have games near completion and pull the plug for whatever reason. With Ultracore, formerly known as Project Hardcore, gamers had extraordinarily little to go on. There simply was not a lot of information available. That has changed as Ultracore saw physical release last year. It is now coming to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch digital stores.
What is a name
While Ultracore is not as cool, to me at least, as Project Hardcore, I guess the change makes sense. Maybe someone grabbed the rights to the name over the years or something. Who knows, it is called Ultracore now and that is that.
What matters is the game itself was apparently fixed up by ININ Games. It seems that former members of the original development team were involved in this release. The press release claims Ultracore was “…improved, optimized” but does not go into any detail as to what exactly was done.
It is evident from the YouTube video above that Ultracore is still impressive. Graphically it holds up extremely well. The major improvements seem to have been focused on the music side. That makes sense as modern hardware has much better audio quality than the Sega Genesis could ever produce.
Ultracore was a labor of love
“I know the care, love, sweat and hard work that went into creating Hardcore in the first place by all involved parties. Thus, I think it is fantastic that this product finally gets to see the light of day and for people to be able to play it.” – Fredrik Liljegren, one of the 4 founders of DICE.
It is not often that we see a release like this. One company that is doing it on a regular basis is Piko Interactive. Go ahead, check out their impressive library of released “rescueware” titles. While there, check out their growing library of ports we would have not gotten otherwise.
Now, who do we talk to about a Sega Genesis release of Ultracore? For more info on the physical release check out Strictly Limited Games.
