If you do not know what Eye of the Beholder is then continue reading this article. If you know, and do not have it yet, head over to GoG.com and grab the trilogy right now. There is a link at the bottom for your convenience. Dungeon crawling fun does not get much better than this Westwood Associates and SSI classic franchise.
Eye of the Beholder Defined a dying category
By the 1990’s the first-person dungeon crawler was a dying category. In the 1980’s it was a staple of computer gaming. It was nearly as popular as point and click adventures. I know, for some dungeon crawlers were more popular. They were certainly more serious overall.
What was unique about the Eye of the Beholder franchise was the story. It was one of the first times that Dungeons and Dragons rules were applied to a first-person dungeon crawler. Previously, SSI had used the D&D rules for adventures such as Heroes of the Lance.
Continuing a tradition
SSI was known for allowing party migration to newer games. That was available for Eye of the Beholder fans and the sequels. You can literally start the first game with one party and see them through the two sequels. This allows you to see your characters grow and become medieval supermen upon completing the third game.
Fans have been working on keeping the franchise alive as well. One is porting the first game to the Commodore 64. This level of fandom is tough to come by and too often companies shut it down. Thankfully, so far anyhow, no one has shut down this fan port.
