DOS Mario Ported to Commodore Amiga as Amigo, Work in Progress

Amigo Super Mario Bros for Commodore Amiga

Fans of the Super Mario Bros franchise, particularly 8 and 16-bit, will want to pay attention. DOS Mario, a title that has been around for decades, is being ported to the Commodore Amiga computer. Currently called Amigo, this fan port of a fan game looks rather interesting. All the basics are here, goombas, coin boxes, star power, etc. Just do not tell the Big N about it.

DOS Mario is Super Mario by another name

DOS Mario was released in the mid 1990’s by Mike Wiering. It was a clone of Super Mario Bros by Nintendo, obviously. There were some liberties taken but not enough for it to become an original work. Things such as trees in the background are different. Same for clouds and bushes – they are different than what Nintendo used.

Enter Amigo, Super Mario for Commodore Amiga

Erik Hogan, an administrator of the Commodore Amiga Facebook group. Hogan is working on a port of DOS Mario to the Commodore Amiga. This version is running on the Scorpion Engine, a free engine for Windows computers.

The music in place right now is kind of grating on my ears. Just wanted to point that out so you can turn it down before hitting play. Many of the enemies used are familiar but still quite close to what Nintendo used. It would not surprise me if there is a Cease and Desist letter on the way.

Why not something 100% original

For most independent homebrew developers, it is not about creating a game for sale. It is about “can I get this running on that?”. It is true if a C&D letter is sent, developers can adjust their resources in another direction. For most of us it would seem to make more sense to start with something 100% original. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect world and getting coverage is tough.
