Rage of the Dragons is the result of a failed attempt to make a sequel to Double Dragon. No, not the original late 1980’s game. This was a planned sequel to the 1995 Neo Geo one-on-one fighting game. Noise Factory were unable to secure the rights, so they changed a few details. Can you spot the similarities?
Rage of the Dragon cast is varied
Much like most fighting games, each character has a backstory. While I am not going to detail every single one here, there are a few standouts.
Billy and Jimmy Lewis, not Lee, are brothers who were separated over the death of Mariah. Mariah was Jimmy’s girlfriend was murdered. This sent Jimmy off on a life of his own to become a famous street fighter. Billy pursued a street racing career after his brother split.
Radel is the last of a family of dragon hunters. Sonia is a skilled assassin. Cassandra was an orphan forced out due to fire. Oni, brother of Cassandra, is searching for the truth to their past. Pepe found a scroll from the god Quetzalcoatl. Pupa is a Brazilian girl searching for her estranged brother. Annie is a psychic, or at least grew up in a family full of them. That is just some of the fighters you will find in Rage of the Dragons.
The fighting engine matters a lot
Fans of fighting games from this period probably know how this goes. Rage of the Dragons is a tag team fighting game, like fighting games of the time. These are full tag team partners, not strikers. There are single fighter moves, tag moves, etc.
By default, Rage of the Dragons offers seven default pairings to choose from. If you prefer you can make your own combination of fighters – approximately 80 combinations are possible.
Future for Rage of the Dragons
Piko Interactive announced in early May 2020 that they acquired the rights to Rage of the Dragons. While their plans with the game are unknown currently, their history gives hope. We may see ports and digital re-releases of Rage of the Dragons soon.
