Mortal Kombat Invades Streets of Rage 2 Part 1

Mortal Kombat Streets of Rage 2

While Streets of Rage 4 is still riding high on fan support, other fans have been keeping an earlier entry alive. Part of that effort is adding new characters to Streets of Rage 2, released on Sega Genesis in the early 1990’s. One of the more interesting hacks I have discovered adds Mortal Kombat characters to the cast of Sega’s classic brawler. This is part one as there are many characters that were added.

Invading fighters lineup

There are three Mortal Kombat characters featured in the video below. They are Jax, Kitana, and Kung Lao. In this video I play through the first level with each character. This works well as this level is broken up into three parts. Part one is the streets, part two is the night club/dining area, and finally the back alley.

First up is Jax, the cybernetically enhanced soldier. As you can see from the video, he makes short work of anyone that steps in his way. While his knife wielding animation works well, his throw does not. Throwing opponents is quite disjointed. That knife attack though looks brutal.

Next up is Kung Lao, the former Shaolin monk and member of the White Lotus Society. As you can see in the video above, Kung Lao matches up much better to the Streets of Rage 2 crew. The only thing I see out of place here is his fall when attacked. It looks like he was surprised or something.

Finally, the 10,000-year-old princess, Kitana. Now she is probably overpowered in this incarnation. She has several multiple hits moves. Do her combo move and you get a double hit leg sweep at the end. Same thing for the knife attack with Kitana, double hits. This does help make the game a little easier if you want less challenge.

Streets of Rage 2 and Mortal Kombat fit together

What is fun about these character hacks is finding out what games work. Kind of like that old rumor of syncing up movies to The Wizard of Oz. Some characters work better than others, of course. Half the fun is figuring out the combinations that work.

Check out the hack, available on ROMHacking.net. Unfortunately, Sega has not released Streets of Rage 2 as freeware so I cannot link to the game ROM. For more Streets of Rage 2 hacks, check these articles out. Grab a deal on Streets of Rage 4 here.
