Liberated is a new graphic novel come to life in the tech-noir genre. This is a new take on the idea of a visual novel. At least the way we think of them right now. The interaction you have in the game is very comic book based. The closest I can think to this is a 1995 Sega Genesis game, Comix Zone.
Liberated does not box you in
Well, the game kind of does but it is more comic panels. Not boxes. Each scene is handled in its own comic book panel. Much like Sega’s Comix Zone from the mid 1990’s. Some panels will require action and quick reflexes. Other panels will require stealth and puzzle solving.
“Liberated has been a huge labour of love and collaborative effort between Walkabout, Atomic Wolf and L.inc,” said Piotr Gnyp, head of BizDev at Walkabout. “We hope that with Liberated we will give a second life to comic book and graphic novel genres, using technology to bring them into a new era of interactive storytelling.”
Not always black and white
Normally when you mention digital comic to people, they think of Marvel or DC. They think of static images and maybe an auto panning program.
Liberated is not that type of digital comic.
It is also not another game in the vein of Snatcher (Sega CD). No, here you are faced with many opportunities, some dangerous, others more mentally challenging.
Set in the near future, Liberated tells the story of a world falling into authoritarianism. Corporations using new technology fight against state-driven propaganda. Citizens are faced with their data being weaponized. This blurs the lines between revolution and terrorism. How will you traverse this world?
That noire feeling we love
I have covered a few noire style games already. They are fun and so far, unique, and interesting. I just love the genre and love seeing it gain attention.
What is cool about the noire genre is, it has been around for a long time. Déjà vu and UnInvited (PC and NES), Nightshade (NES), L.A. Noire (PlayStation, PC), and many more show love in this genre.
Will you be supporting Liberated on the Nintendo Switch? What about the other platforms (listed below)?
