Resident Evil Remix (REX) is a fan remake of the original Resident Evil (RE) using the RE 4 engine. This is not the first time someone has done this. What is unique here is, it is the first time (that I know of) using the RE 4 engine. The spirit of the first game is there with a lot of “additional” content.
Resident Evil Remix takes liberties
Any remake must do something different to warrant fans wanting it. Just upgrading the graphics is usually not enough. While that is something done with REX, there is more to look forward to here.
Some notable changes, thanks to Hey Poor Player, include keeping the RE 4 inventory system. Also, you will be able to use grenades and a self-defense gun. Breakable boxes and vases make an appearance so you can rearrange the mansion a bit. There is even a couple of enemies that prefer chainsaws as their weapons included.
New look at the original
Other differences that you can expect to see are more jarring. For instance – gone is the fixed camera angle. This removes a bit of the tension built due to selective angles. As you can see in the Residence of Evil produced video, you have free look now. RoE shows this free look capability off a bit using the dining room area.
There are also changes to the mansion from what I remember. I have not played the remake. The last time I went through the mansion was the Director’s Cut on the original PlayStation. That means, some of what I see as new in this video may not be all that new. One such thing is apparently there being a door to the basement to the right of the main staircase.
Chances of Capcom taking this down are high
Who does not think Capcom is just waiting to drop a cease and desist on this project? It is coming but it when. Also, how will the team react? Obviously stopping using Capcom own materials will happen. The question is, will they continue and go on to make a full game? Their take on the survival horror genre if you will.
