Independent homebrew developers such as Matthew Kiehl continue to push classic hardware. Check out this Shadow of the Beast proof of concept he has created for the Intellivision console. Sure, it is not as graphically impressive as more powerful platforms, that is a given. What is awesome here though is just what he has gotten working so far. This is in IntyBasic too, not exactly getting close to the silicon here.
Shadow of the Beast lives
Originally released in the late 80’s by Psygnosis, Shadow of the Beast was impressive. Graphically it was a unique title, one that was almost alone in that regard. The audio, depending on the platform you played on, was impressive as well.
The story follows the adventures of Aarbron who was kidnapped as a child. Through some weird events involving magic he became a warrior-servant of an evil entity named Maletoth. Upon viewing a man being executed memories flooded Aarbron. Realizing that was his father that was killed fueled the revenge coming. That is where Shadow of the Beast kicks off.
Ports left and right
Shadow of the Beast saw many ports over the years. Starting life on the Commodore Amiga it was an obvious choice to port to other computers. Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, and more got versions. Consoles also got in on the fun – Mega Drive/Sega Genesis, Master System, TurboGrafx-CD, Atari Lynx and more. More recently there was a remake for the PlayStation 4 console.
Coming to the Intellivision
Consoles such as the Intellivision were not commercially viable when this game initially hit. That is not stopping developers like Matthew Kiehl. Over on the AtariAge forums he has released several builds of Shadow of the Beast for Intellivision. The source code is available as well if you are interested in seeing how he did it.
