Ryan Reynolds Tackling Dragons Lair on Netflix

Ryan Reynolds Dragon's Lair

Dragon’s Lair is one of those games that will forever be a part of gaming. In one way or another, this game will be around. This animated Laserdisc classic was even made into a Saturday morning cartoon. Eventually there would be two sequels released which used the Laserdisc hardware to tell more adventures of Dirk the Daring. Enter Netflix and their furthering interest in original programming. It seems the streaming service has set their sights on Dragon’s Lair and are eyeing Ryan Reynolds to star in a live action feature length movie.

Dragon’s Lair, a tale worth retelling

For those unfamiliar with Dragon’s Lair, you control Dirk the Daring in his quest to save the princess. Singe, the evil dragon, has kidnapped Princess Daphne and hidden her in his castle. Sounds simple enough, right?

Nothing else like it

One reason Dragon’s Lair was so popular was because there was literally nothing else like it at the time. Laserdisc technology was new, and this Don Bluth classic was a good example of what it could do. Unfortunately, we also saw the limitations of the hardware clearly present.

Scenes required loading which caused pauses in the action. This was something arcade gamers were not accustomed to. To add longevity to Dragon’s Lair some scenes were flipped/mirrored.

The long-rumored movie finally happening

Netflix has been negotiating for the rights to Dragon’s Lair for over a year now. According to Hollywood Reporter, Roy Lee via his company Vertigo Entertainment will produce the film. Trevor Engelson via Underground Films is also involved in production along with Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, and Jon Pomeroy. Finally, Reynolds’ Maximum Effort company will also be involved with production.

Is it me, or is this a lot of “producers”?

On with the script which is being handled by Dan and Kevin Hageman – they worked on The Lego Movie and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

Not going to lie, after researching this a little bit, I went from optimistic to concerned real quick. All I see is a cluster mess about to happen. Maybe they can pull it off though.
