Wart Worm Wingding is a new game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), currently on Kickstarter. This 2-player game hearkens back to classics such as Bubble Bobble and Dig Dug. That is good company to be with when creating a new NES game. This is the type of Kickstarter I like covering as Wart Worm Wingding is done, the developers are just gauging interest at this point.
The story, just the facts
On a far away planet alien settlers have set up mining operations. As with most invaders from another planet little thought was given to the local populace. This is where we meet Wing and Ding, two worms that are tired of the aliens invasive mining.
Wing and Ding can use their powerful whip attacks, or powerups scattered in levels, to dispatch the aliens.
Retro influence on Wart Worm Wingding
As mentioned already, Wart Worm Wingding pulls inspiration from both Dig Dug and Bubble Bobble. Each level is a single screen affair with a pre-set number of enemies to defeat. Once all the enemies are defeated a mining icon will appear. Collect that icon and you are off to the next level.
Bouncy barrels allow Wing or Ding to jump extremely high while you avoid environmental hazards. There are also ladders and mazes to traverse while collecting power-ups and grabbing scoring items.
You are not invincible so pay attention to your life meter.
Longevity of a retro game
Wart Worm Wingding features over 100 levels with 10 boss fights to challenge your skills. According to the Kickstarter campaign page, every 10 levels the aesthetics change. This keeps the action fresh and interesting for those capable of seeing the later levels.
Music to rock out to
Ben Burnes provides the soundtrack for Wart Worm Wingding. The track list is below:
Rabbit Town
Penguin Town
Penguins vs Rabbits
Penultimate
Hands on with the demo
Wart Worm Wingding certainly has that Dig Dug feel in how you battle enemies. Bubble Bobble is also represented well with platforming and some puzzle elements to deal with. The demo is enough to decide on supporting the Kickstarter project so grab it. Play and then throw some support at John Vanderhoef so that we might see more games from him.
