Myst Demake Hits Apple II Computer

Myst Rocket Ship

No matter if you were a gamer when Myst was released or not, you probably knew about it. For many, this was the single reason to buy a Macintosh back in the day. Sure, we eventually saw it hit Windows (3.1 for those keeping count) almost a year later, that is a life time in gaming terms. Now we can count the Apple II as another platform to get a Myst release. Seriously.

Beautiful source material means graphical WTF port

The graphics in Myst were talked about quite a bit. It is a beautiful game, especially considering the time it was released. Graphics in computer games at the time were just not that detailed. Sure, it was an on rails world which didn’t matter – it was beautiful.

All that graphical majesty is lost on the Apple II demake though. What is amazing is the locales in this Myst demake are still recognizable. Even the developer states that a lot of the visual clues are gone here so you may want to hit their website for spoilers.

Myst Apple II Demake

Myst on Apple II possible thanks to low res mode

While gamers today may not recognize what “low res mode” is, it is well known to us that lived through that period. The graphics for Myst on Apple II were created by hand, a great video covering it on the devs page, but they are functional.

I am not the type that can tell you much about a game I last played over two decades ago but I recognize most of these locations. As I look at these pics the memories kind of come over me like waves. Fun times.

I will be giving Myst on the Apple II a run through later this week and posting a YouTube video for those interested.

For now, head over to Deater.net and grab a copy of Myst for Apple II. Want to enjoy it on an actual Apple II? Hit eBay. Want a copy of the original? Hit Amazon. Here you go if you want more Myst fun.
