How many people reading this remember the Karate Kid? The original from 1984, not that reboot attempt in 2010 (I will be ignoring that one for a long time). Remember Mr. Miyagi and how stern he was about training? Apparently, he is just as stern about his broth. We find this out in this independent homebrew release from Atlantis for the Commodore 64.
Gaming going where Karate Kid movie wouldn’t
Sure, there was a chopsticks scene in Karate Kid, it didn’t involve broth. That is where the game has changed things up a bit. The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) version of Karate Kid attempted to recreate the scene from the movie while Drunken Chopsticks adjusts the scene to fit gaming.
Drunken Chopsticks is very simple once you understand it meanwhile the lesson being taught is very similar to the movie.
Drunken Chopsticks at work
Controlling a hand that is holding chopsticks, you are tasked with stopping flies from getting into Mr. Miyagi’s broth. This is harder than it sounds as the flies appear to not have taken their ADHD medicine flying around haphazardly. You have three chances to catch each fly, fail and it is time to paint fences.
Failing at Drunken Chopsticks is rather easy. Once three flies get by you and into the broth it is game over. I hope Indie Retro News is right and that your character is not taken outside and forced to paint a fence or wax the car at that point. Thankfully we don’t have to worry about controlling Daniel if he is made to do that stuff.
History of Drunken Chopsticks and getting your copy
Atlantis released Drunken Chopsticks at BBC Party #14 at the end of February 2020. The game is free so grab a copy and play it on your favorite method of playing Commodore 64 games. If you are longing for some Karate Kid action check out Amazon. If you need a Commodore 64 then check eBay for a steal.
