Final Fantasy VII (FF7) is arguably the game that ended the console war between Sega’s Saturn console and the original PlayStation. When the media hype hit for FF7 it was over. Sega was a company who had lost their way. They had absolutely nothing in development that could even stand proud in the shadow of Final Fantasy VII. Sony knew it too. That is probably why they allegedly shelled out big bucks to get the new Square Enix role-playing game as an exclusive to PlayStation. Originally released on September 7th, 1997 in North America, it was clear that this was a big push for both companies.
The remake half a decade in the making
The first time we saw FF7 being redone was at the 2005 Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3) event. 10 years later Square Enix would officially announce a modern remake of Final Fantasy VII for the Sony PlayStation 4 console.
There are several differences fans can expect. Here are five of them I found so far.
1 – Spreading content out
I know what you are thinking, the original was on three discs so how is this different? Well, with the original, you got all three discs in one purchase. The remake will be released as a “multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience” according to Cinemablend.
Yep, episodic gaming is coming back. Remember how well that worked out for Half-Life 2 and SiN Episodes?
Hopefully Square Enix will be able to traverse the troubled waters of episodic gaming better.
2 – Two battle systems
For purists, the original battle system – complete with Active Time Battle (ATB) gauges – will be available. The difference is, so will another battle system. This second battle system will feature movement and standard attacks in real-time which will fill your ATB gauge.
Once your ATB gauge is full things get interesting. You will be able to slow down the action to cast spells, use special abilities, and use items.
3 – Graphic and audio improvements
This is a no brainer, of course the graphics and audio will be improved. It would be cool if gamers coul revert to the old model style for nostalgia.
Aerith seems to be taking quite a change graphically with the remake. She is nearly unrecognizable, even side by side to the original. Everyone else bears a striking resemblance to their former selves.
How awesome would that be if they include that option?
4 – Opening sequence
The opening video for Final Fantasy VII is also getting a new coat of paint. The intro is also getting extended a bit with new footage not seen in the original game.
According to ScreenRant.com the opening sequence features a bit more direct information about how Midgar is hurting the planet. This was something we didn’t learn about till later in the original Final Fantasy VII. The barren wastelands surrounding Midgar are showcased as a bird flies over them. The camera swoops into Midgar showcasing the buildings, dingy streets, etc as well.
5 – Additional content
This is another no brainer. Obviously new content will be made available for the Final Fantasy VII remake, this is not Sega handling it. Seriously though, details here have not been leaked so exactly what is new is simply not available yet. Will Square Enix change Aerith’s death or will we see brand new characters? Hopefully they fix the whole Phoenix Down being readily available plot hole.
Will Square Enix be bringing back the infamous “hot tub scene” from the original?
The demo is now available. It features a small taste of the overall game, covering the initial bombing segment. Here you will meet a core member of your team. Also, Cloud Strife might have a change of heart about his direction in life.
