Sega CD Classic Adventure Game Seeing Rerelease

Quick, who remembers The Secret of Monkey Island? Specifically, the Sega CD version. For console gamers, like me, this was my first taste of Lucasfilm adventure games. While I had a computer, it was an old Color Computer II which was used to write short stories and the like. Gaming was not an option on that thing. Limited Run Games are bringing this classic Sega CD game for one more run. A very limited one.

One more lap for a classic

If you are expecting any additional content or anything like that with this re-release of Secret of Monkey Island, then I have some bad news. There won’t be any. It appears that this version is the Sega CD original in a new package.

Like what Limited Run Games did with their re-release of many Star Wars titles.

There will be a long box manual that hearkens back to the Sega CD original though so there is that. According to the LRG Facebook page, there will also be a PC version re-release later this year.

Missed opportunity

It would be cool to see these games that are being re-released get some fixes, upgrades, etc. I mean, the technology is available. Instead, we are simply given the original with a little bit of new packaging.

For those that want it, these re-releases may be the only way to enjoy them – though with the base idea of Limited Run Games’ business model, it might be cheaper to seek out the originals in many situations.

Maybe with the PC version LRG will be able to provide something more than just a straight re-release of the original version for modern PCs.

I hope, but figure it is for nill.

When and where to get your copy

Get ready and keep a browser tab open pointing to the Limited Run Games website. If you want to have a chance of getting a copy, make sure your payment information is available for immediate entry because some LRG releases sell out in minutes.

  1. Harry Lags says:

What’s the point in a new re-release of Secret of Monkey Island if
there is no fixes, upgrades, etc.
That’s the whole point in releasing something new,
is to provide something more than just a straight re-release
    of the original version.

I already have the original Sega CD version,so what’s the point now.
I was expecting something new and enhanced.
Guess i’ll stick with the original Sega CD version for now!

  2. Completely agree with you Harry. I mentioned in the article that it would be nice to see something changed in the game but that is not what we are getting. Maybe the PC version when it is re-released later this year they will go with some updates of some kind?

Unfortunately, we are only going to see cosmetic changes to the manual and packaging here. Not worth the exorbitant prices that will be asked by LRG and resellers after it is sold out.
