Hasbro Launching New Tiger Electronics LCD Handheld Games

Tiger Electronics

Who remembers Tiger Electronics handheld games? These were simple gaming devices that were often licensed affairs featuring a single-color background. On top of that background, in a manner like the old Game and Watch by Nintendo, there would be simple black icons shown. This method was used for years and for many licenses from Mega Man 2 to Street Fighter 2 to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and more. The adage, what is old is new again rings true here as Tiger Electronics are making a comeback thanks to Hasbro.

Good or bad, they are coming

Set to launch in the fall of 2020 according to CNet, the relaunched Tiger Electronics devices will feature licenses much like they did originally. Priced at $14.99 this handheld line will be launched with four titles initially – like the way Mattel has launched their WWE meets He-Man figures.

The first four titles will be:

Marvel X-Men Project X
The Little Mermaid
Transformers
Sonic the Hedgehog 3

First, Sega, I am pretty sure this is not the way fans wanted a re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Just saying.

Comicbook states we could see these new handhelds available for pre-order at retailers like Walmart and Amazon and available this August.

Versatile design might be missing

One thing that set the original Tiger Electronics apart was custom controls for each device. If a game required a full d-pad and two action buttons, then that is what it got. If you only needed to move left and right or up and down and only one action button, then the controls reflected this.

The point is the originals were quite versatile in button layouts and such at least with the left d-pad. These new ones don’t have that. Only the Little Mermaid has a different d-pad style but they all have wide and narrow action buttons. This is a similar style to the originals so the nostalgia there is strong.
