Amstrad GX-4000 Sees Fan Porting Sonic the Hedgehog

SonicGX Sonic the Hedgehog

When Sega released Sonic the Hedgehog it was one of those moments in gaming that everything had to be right. Luckily it was. Sony would go through a similar situation later with Crash Bandicoot but that is another article for another day. Sega went on an all-out push for Sonic and it paid off in spades. We saw releases not only on the Sega Genesis but the Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear. Now, thanks to fans we will soon be able to count the Amstrad GX-4000 among those platforms that Sonic has graced. Even if it is not official, it is amazing it is running at all.

The Amstrad GX-4000 a forgotten platform

Released in the early 1990’s, the Amstrad GX-4000 is powered by a similar processor as that in the Sega Master System. That should make it possible for independent homebrew developers, NoRecess/Condense, to at least come close to what Sega was able to accomplish.

During the couple years on the market that the Amstrad GX-4000 enjoyed there were 27 titles released (according to Wikipedia). Interestingly, there were more than a couple licensed titles such as Batman and Dick Tracy released. Soon Sonic will join those titles in an unofficial capacity.

Back to what you paid for

What is here so far is already above what Sega did, I think anyhow. Graphically, SonicGX is already standing shoulder to shoulder with Sega’s 8-bit offerings. There are plenty of little details that need to be added but what is there is awesome already.

Check out the video above to get a taste of what we can expect here. According to Indie Retro News, SonicGX was demoed at the Alchimie XIII event in France. SonicGX features 40 colors on screen and will see release around late 2020.

I vaguely remember this console, didn’t it have cassette games? I guess better late than never with Sonic, but it’s cool people are still creating games for this console. 🙂
