Do you remember Sega’s forgotten mascot character? Alex Kidd was almost the mascot for Sega but for some reason he was dropped. I am sure there is a YouTube video somewhere going into this situation. As with most things that get to a minimal level of popularity, fans are not willing to let go of Kidd as easily as Sega did. That is why we have another Alex Kidd game coming, Alex Kidd 3 – Curse in Miracle World. It is currently a work in progress, but a demo has been made available. Unfortunately, there are already concerns being raised and they are not from Sega.
Not official but still cool
This is a fan game made using free tools such as KiddEd. This program is a freely available level editor that fans can use to make changes to official Alex Kidd releases. There are tons of these level editors, many offering editing of in game sprites, available for many popular games. It is not real programming in its purist sense. People behind these releases are also not legally allowed to sell their games because of copyrighted code within. That has not stopped many from doing so though.
So far, Alex Kidd 3 – Curse in Miracle world features 10 levels and many bosses. Unfortunately, that is where the controversy comes into play here.
Not all roses in this Alex Kidd release
Alex Kidd 3 – Curse in Miracle World is an unofficial game in a series owned by Sega. Now, most of these releases end up with a cease and desist from the owner. That is not the case here, yet anyhow.
No, the controversy with Alex Kidd 3 is in stolen assets. I know, the assets are already “stolen” in a sense. Here though, apparently a few bosses were stolen from designs by another fan.
Where things get worse
What is worse, the designer of those bosses simply asked for recognition for their use. This is a sad state of affairs in the gaming community.
