Sega’s Dreamcast is one of those failed consoles that is more fondly remembered than others. There were just so many good memories gained by fans during the short period the Dreamcast was available. Whether it was the first time you played Sonic in 3D, a brand-new Resident Evil game that did new things, or any of the awesome arcade games available, Sega’s last console had it all. It just didn’t have enough fan support to stay around longer and that is a shame. Fans have continued to support it with new mods and games though, such as this hard drive addition.
Benefits of a hard drive modification
For one, the GD-ROM in the Sega Dreamcast is a proprietary drive. These are not available at most stores (could be said of most console digital drives). There are USB and flash drive modifications available, but they are not so easy to install. I am not saying this modification is super easy.
Back to benefits of a hard drive modification – one is simplicity. You can play all your ‘homebrew’ games on the Sega Dreamcast directly off the hard drive. Using something like Dreamshell and a hacked BIOS will open this hard drive modification to its fullest.
Some steps require soldering
Yes, as with most Dreamcast mods you are going to have to be comfortable soldering. This is the scary part when you first get into these things, but it gets easier as you do it more often. Hackaday.com has a few more details on this process. DreamcasticChannel on YouTube has the full video.
Other steps require dismantling the optical drive in your Dreamcast. While I am normally against this kind of destruction of limited availability components, if you have a broken one it is okay. This is where the hard drive will sit after the mod is completed.
What is next for the Sega Dreamcast
The sky is the limit. I can safely say, back in 2002 a mod like this was just a fantasy. It is awesome to see people making it happen today.
