The Sega Genesis is gaining in popularity again with Sega finally announcing the full lineup for their Sega Genesis Mini giving fans reason to be happy, and some mad. Outside the official products realm we have things like the MegaSD, a new Sega Genesis FPGA based flash cart that is breaking new ground.
A first and a great one at that
Terraonion, according to Nintendo Life the company behind the Super SD System 3 for PC Engine, has worked their magic on a new flash cart for the Sega Genesis. The MegaSD. What makes this flash cart unique to other flash carts, for the price it better be unique, is the fact that the MegaSD can run Sega/Mega CD games – even if you do not have the CD-ROM attachment.
CD gaming on the go and what else?
Technically, yes. You can use the MegaSD with your Sega Nomad, if you have one, and play games such as Snatcher or Sonic CD on the go. Now, just on paper, that sounds awesome. At least to me.
The MegaSD does a lot more than just Sega/Mega CD gaming though as it is a flash cart. That means you can play ROMs for the Sega Genesis (homebrew and legally purchased ROMS of course) but also Master System and even 32X games (if you have the 32X attachment). Everything is saved on an optional Micro SD card.
That is quite a bit of Sega history all available on one cart. You also get cheat code support, save states for Genesis/Mega Drive games, fast reboot, and more at no extra charge.
Cost, when you can get a MegaSD, and more
According to Tech Report, the MegaSD is going to run you about $280 at current exchange rates. Keep that in mind because this bad boy is not expected to start shipping till the first week of August according to Indie Retro News.
So, who is getting one?
