We don’t usually cover action figures here on Retro Gaming Magazine but when they are based on games, why not. Besides, the Sega Genesis version of the game has entered pre-order status with Piko Interactive. The game in question is Switchblade, North American gamers probably recognize the name from the Atari Lynx game, Switchblade II. Piko have brought the original Switchblade to new platforms, featuring new cover art by the original creator.
How is this being done?
Piko are launching a new subsidiary to handle their toy line, aptly named Toyetico. This is interesting for a few reasons. First, it shows they are not doing this as a one-time deal, which is evident on the Kickstarter page. As of this writing they are sitting at about 60 percent funded and still have over three weeks to go. If they can reach several stretch goals, then there will be additional action figures produced. The last stretch goal means some cool Tiger Electronics hand-held style gaming by the way.
More on the toy
More on the Genesis port later, for now, I want to discuss this toy based on the lead character of Switchblade. This little guy features nine points of articulation, is stylized after Playmates, Hasbro, and Toybiz figures from the 1980s and 1990s. I do want to stress, for those that won’t bother going to the Kickstarter and reading up on this, Toyetico are already in possession of the prototype figure (see the pics in this article). The Kickstarter is to pay to commission production on this 100% original figure (stretch goals to cover additional figures).
This is not a copy, repaint, or whatever of any other figure. That is the point I am trying to make here.
Which figure is it?
The first figure is based on Hiro, the hero of Switchblade. He looks like he stepped off the front of the packaging for the Sega Genesis and Atari Jaguar games. Very cool how much attention to detail was followed here.
If you love gaming, you probably have a history with action figures as well. This figure represents the beginning of a brand-new independent action figure company. In case you are wondering, there are not many of those left.
What to do next
Hit the Kickstarter for more information and possibly throw some cash their way. You won’t be charged unless the campaign is successful and only after the project timer has run out (late in June for those wondering). That means you have time to budget in your pledge so don’t let this pass you by.
