Konami, once the butt of many an Internet joke (who are we kidding, they still are) have been working to reverse that fortune with several anniversary compilation releases recently. One of those, one that hit close to home for me anyhow, is Contra Anniversary Collection. For fans of the series this is a collection that you simply cannot miss. There is no other way to word it. It is not complete though, and this may be nitpicking, because they skipped the black sheep of the family here. Did they do some WWE style editing to their history and that game simply “never existed”?
I don’t know the reasons, but Contra Force on the Nintendo Entertainment System is not in this collection. It is also not scheduled for the after-release update, which will bring six Japanese variations to fans according to IGN. Other than this one game being missing, this is an impressive collection.
The major entries in the franchise are here though including the original and NES sequel, both 16-bit entries and even the Game Boy release (Operation C). Fans will be all over this, as they should be. Konami is also pushing to get their name back in good graces with fans by including a digital bonus book full of information on Contra.
According to Retro Game Network Contra Anniversary Collection will be available for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam. I wish they would support last generation as well with these things as there are millions of gamers that own those platforms. This brings me to another point of concern (bigger than missing Contra Force). RGN mentions that there are no current plans for a physical edition. Me personally, I like having the case on my shelf to look at, to remind me I own that game and spark interest in playing it. Digital doesn’t do that for me, how about you?
Get your $20 ready if Slash Gear are to be believed. For 16 games plus a comprehensive PDF this sounds like a great deal. What other companies do you wish would do anniversary collections like this for their franchises?

Why no release date?
At the time of the writing there was no release date known. I did a search for it and the current release date is tentatively set at September 30th, 2019.
