Before we get too far into this, please be aware, this is probably never going to be finished and released. Considering the convoluted ownership of the rights it may get farther along than most remakes like this would. Now onto the fun. A small group of dedicated fans are working on remaking GoldenEye from the Nintendo 64 within the Unreal Engine. It is still in an early stage of development but what is here so far is quite impressive – almost like the team are approaching this as a resume.

A remake is not always a retread

In the GolednEye 25 video below you will find out a lot of behind the scene details about why things are being done like they are in this remake. It is quite interesting and worth a watch for fans of the game and the movie. This team are very much focused on closing the gap between the two mediums and giving fans of the movie many little Easter eggs to watch for – people just wanting to play will probably just feel they are cool touches. Such as music changing or getting more upbeat in certain scenes as you play are actually connected to that scene in the movie.

Anyone that played the original GoldenEye will instantly realize there are quite a few things different in this remake, not just the graphics and audio.

What about the future

As mentioned already, this is a work in progress that will probably never be completed. This is a shame because the team working on it are really putting their heart and soul into this remake.

The thing is, I am seeing this more as a resume to break into the gaming industry than an actual intent to break any laws or violate trademarks or what have you. The team are putting a lot of dedication into this and it would be a shame to see that talent not put to use on official projects.

How it is a resume

Think about it. The hardest part of breaking into the gaming industry, any industry really, is showcasing your talent. What better way than to do something that gets attention from the press, such as this article, which could end up bringing in the right eyes that can make your dream come true.

If this team simply did another First-Person Shooter (FPS) then they would not be garnering near the attention they are by choosing something like GoldenEye for their efforts. It is smart and it helps get critiquing eyes on the project as well as possibly someone with the power to make other projects happen.

Either way, the team are doing an awesome job here.
