Atari ST Fan Porting Ghouls ‘N Ghosts

Ghouls 'N Ghosts

Retro gaming fans are cut from a different cloth, aren’t they? A game not made for a platform you want to play it on? For most of us that is a big “get over it” but for some retro gaming fans that have the skills to program, it is an opportunity. Even if there was a port of said game on X platform, sometimes retro gaming fans will make a newer port anyhow – such as Donkey Kong Jr for the Intellivision. While there was no official Atari ST version of Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, there was a port of the first game – Ghosts ‘N Goblins, one fan is taking it upon himself to handle the port.

Before you get too excited, please note that according to the comments on YouTube, development of Ghouls ‘N Ghosts is slowed down due to real life. Development allegedly continues, just slower than previous years.

Right now, you can check out various development videos by AnimalnCorpore that show various stages of development for Ghouls ‘N Ghosts and other videos covering other efforts.

The one that has caught my attention was the video for stage 3 on an Atari STE featuring an 8 MHz CPU with 4 megs of RAM. While not perfect, what is shown is quite impressive and shows that the Atari computer is more than capable of handling the port of Ghouls ‘N Ghosts.

For those that do not know, Ghouls ‘N Ghosts was originally released in 1988 in arcades. This series is known for its hard as nails unforgiving gameplay. Modern gamers have to understand that Ghouls ‘N Ghosts was released in a different period of gaming – it was definitely a quarter muncher but given enough dedication, gamers could master this Capcom classic.

It will be interesting to watch as development continues on this port of Ghouls ‘N Ghosts. We compared the Sega Genesis version against the Super Nintendo Super Ghouls ‘N Ghosts in our first issue of Retro Gaming Magazine.
