You don’t see the Atari 7800 come up in conversation all that often when discussing independent homebrew games. There simply are not a ton of them being developed, certainly less than there are for the Commodore 64 (can any platform touch that level of popularity though?). Anyhow, strap in, get ready, and prepare yourself for Rikki & Vikki for the Atari 7800. I suggest not drinking any liquids when viewing the video below.
If you have checked out, or better yet bought, Sam’ Journey then you know just how well independent homebrew developers have dialed in these classic platforms. Rikki & Vikki is just one more phenomenal example of how impressive independent homebrew games can be.
I know, great graphics and music don’t make a great game. According to the early reviews on the Steam page, Rikki & Vikki is a quality release, though tough. Just like true retrogaming fans like them.
The cool thing is, the above trailer is the Atari 7800 version. That is just jaw droppingly awesome to me.
Direct from the AtariAge thread where the developer is talking with fans we have some basic information.
- Microsoft Windows
- Costs $9.99.
- Progress and High Scores are saved.
- Music is in Stereo.
- Supports Steam Achievements.
- Supports Performance Adjustments.
- Atari 7800 ProSystem
- Costs $59.99 plus shipping.
- Includes a sturdy box, cartridge, and Misery Landtour guide with two complimentary tickets.
- Progress and High Scores aren’t saved.
- Music is in Mono.
Some other tidbits to keep in mind from that thread include the fact that the Atari 7800 version is limited to 550 copies. That is it. Another thing, this is not going to be available via pre-order – if you want it, you better be ready with your payment information as it is first come, first serve. Also, there will not be a ROM file available for sale later if you miss out on the physical and want to grab that version on the cheap. Sorry. Digital only is limited to the Steam version for Windows.
Who is getting in on this? Let me know in the comments.
Steam version available here. Need an Atari 7800 to enjoy Rikki & Vikki on? Grab your next Atari 7800 on eBay or on Amazon

There are plenty of Atari 7800 homebrews being developed. Go over to Atariage and the Atariage store and you’ll see dozens of them.
I am a member over on AtariAge, I watch the forums closely, as well as other sources. Some great stuff being developed for sure. Newer developers are definitely pushing the hardware farther than expected.
