Intellivision, a name that you probably would not have thought would be in the major gaming news in 2018, certainly is. While the Amico is still a ways off, fans have been hard at work keeping the original hardware alive and well with new games. One such new game is Thio’s Odissey, their spelling, which pulls major inspiration from the Wonder Boy franchise.
Imitation and flattery
Thio’s Odissey is obviously inspired by the earlier Wonder Boy games as there are no role-playing game elements to be found here. Just straight action, running, and jumping. Just like the early games that appeared on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super NES, and Turbo Grafx-16. Ah, the good old days.
I actually liked those later iterations of Wonder Boy more than the earlier ones. I guess I just enjoyed the slower pace and exploration involved. Anyhow, back to Thio’s Odissey.
Smooth scrolling
The impressive part is, well watch the video above. For those not interested in that, or don’t have time, Thio’s Odissey features smooth 2D side scrolling graphics with more than a few objects on the screen at once.
Devil is in the details
There is a lot of detail in the graphics as well. Thio is detailed well, the enemies are clearly certain animals, and fruits and other collectibles are easily recognizable. Through creative use of minimalist graphics, Thio’s Odissey has been able to give more for the gamer to enjoy. I like this style. Great job there.
According to Indie Retro News, this is the developers first IntyBASIC game after having bought a book on the programming language. Impressive.
While this is not literally a copy of Wonder Boy for the Intellivision, I figure this is as close as we are going to get. Head over to AtariAge and support these guys. The more support fans give projects like this, the more projects we may see in the future from independent homebrew developers. As that happens, we all win.
