One thing that Nintendo would certainly not allow on their consoles prior to the “Play it Loud” campaign was demonic games. I am pretty sure they didn’t allow them on their consoles till around the Nintendo Gamecube, two console generations later (Eternal Darkness being the game I am thinking of here). That is in the United States. In Japan it was a different story as franchises such as Shin Megami Tensei and Tenshi No Uta existed on the Super Famicom (Japan’s Super NES). Weird how that worked back then. Even though decades later, English gamers can finally play the latter title there.
Tenshi No Uta is a love story that involves demons and even the devil himself, Satan. Quite a mature title actually. You take control of Rayard who is a simple living kind of guy. He visits the travelling circus for some cheap entertainment and meets the love of his life, Callana. Unfortunately for Rayard, Callana has to leave with the circus because that is her job and livelihood.
Rayard holds out for a few days before he cannot take it any longer and sets out to find Callana and tell her how he feels. That is when the action begins.
One thing that set Tenshi No Uta apart from other console role-playing games of the time is the parley system in place. Shin Megami Tensei had a similar option available so Tenshi No Uta is not the first, or only, title to use this system.
For those not familiar with the parley system it allows you to negotiate with monsters. That means the outcome of encounters is not limited to fighting to the death as you can befriend the creatures you meet, gain gold and experience, etc without killing them. It is an interesting idea that is sadly not used more in role-playing games, especially console ones.
Grab the patch file over at ROMHacking.net, since Tenshi No Uta is not freeware, we cannot point you to a download. If you want to grab a physical copy then hit eBay for a deal.
