If you are a gamer from back in the late 1980’s then you probably remember the Full Motion Video (FMV) craze that was picking up steam around then. While never really taking off on the Turbo Grafx-16 CD-ROM add-on, other than Sherlock Holmes there was not much here, FMV did flourish on personal computers and when the Sega CD launched. Well, flourish may be a rather optimistic way of looking at it. Let’s say, more of them were released. Double Switch being one of them.
Our friends over at Retro Game Network are reporting that Double Switch 25th Anniversary Edition will hit the PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Windows computers. As was announced by Limited Run Games at their E3 press conference, they will be the ones releasing Double Switch 25th Anniversary Edition.
That means, extremely low print runs and possibly two versions available – one cheaper with few frills, and one more expensive but containing some extras to make swallowing that high price a little easier. At the end of the day though, Double Switch is still a Full Motion Video game.
I just happen to love these types of games. I truly believe had the market not been saturated to the point where it fell out like a mini “video game crash” that only really effected this one genre, that FMV games could have become something awesome.
The biggest problem gamers had with FMV games back on the Sega CD was the lack of color and resolution. When dealing with live actors, those two things are paramount to delivering a great looking product. Everything was grainy and off sync due to limitations of the technology (compression techniques were not as good as they needed to be).
With modern technology we are now able to enjoy these games like they probably were meant to be enjoyed. You are basically playing a high definition movie with you in control of key points.
Double Switch, for those that don’t know, features over 20 characters, seven different locations for the action, and is more involving than Night Trap ever was. Plus, there is some star power in Double Switch, sure Dana Plato (R.I.P.) was in Night Trap but name one other actor. Corey Haim (R.I.P), R. Lee Ermey (R.I.P.), and Debbie Harry (singer for the music group, Blondie) are in Double Switch.
Double Switch used a similar game play method as Night Trap. There are many rooms and a mini map alongside the window displaying the events. It is simple and it can be chaotic because things happen concurrently which requires a lot of back and forth timing between video streams.
Don’t worry if you are not interested in getting in on the physical edition fun as Double Switch will see release on PlayStation Network and Steam digitally. Limited Run Games are not doing their usual “first come, first serve” business model with Double Switch. From November 2nd to November 16th, fans will be able to pre-order their copy of Double Switch on PlayStation 4. At least there is that bit of good news for fans who would rather avoid eBay price gouging resellers. The original Double Switch saw release on Sega CD and Sega Saturn.
Now, someone call me when they decide to redo Dracula Unleashed.
