Lost World Jurassic Park Brings Dinosaurs Home on Sega Genesis – September 16th, 1997 – Today in History

Lost World Jurassic Park

Sega and the Jurassic Park license go way back in the 16-bit era. There are at least three Sega Genesis games using this franchise license, a Saturn game based on Lost World Jurassic Park specifically, and a Game Gear game based on this license – all from Sega. That is just the Lost World Jurassic Park license, they have versions and ports of games based on the other movies as well. To say Sega went all in on this franchise is probably an understatement. The real question is, did the gamble pay off for them? For some gamers, yes, yes it did.

Unique directions taken

Speaking of the Sega Saturn, and Sony PlayStation, version of Lost World Jurassic Park, we have to note that developers flipped the script so to speak with this license. Usually the 32-bit versions would commonly be overhead or 3D into the game world view with the 16-bit versions being 2D side scrolling affairs. Not so with this one. The PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions are 2.5D side scrolling, kind of like a “lite” version of the Pandemonium engine. The Sega Genesis version is a 2D overhead affair.

Lost World Jurassic Park is long

Lost World Jurassic Park features 19 missions spread across four areas of Isla Sorna. Your job, as an unnamed park employee, is to capture all of the on the loose dinosaurs before rival hunters capture them and transport them elsewhere.

Varied weapons at your disposal

There are four bosses that must be taken out, one at the end of each section. Weapons range from a standard taser to shotguns are available. All the weapons in Lost World Jurassic Park can be used on dinosaurs or hunters. Vehicles are available as well which can be used to ram dinosaurs into submission.

Sega included a two player mode which offers players the chance to play together or against each other. Grab a friend and see who is the better hunter, or work together to save the world.

Popular license, plenty of options for fans

Considering the popularity of Jurassic World, fans may be interested in checking out earlier iterations of the franchise in gaming form. Check eBay for a deal or get it with Prime on Amazon so you can do some dinosaur hunting. Don’t expect to see Lost World Jurassic Park available digitally, this license has long run out.
