The iconic Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64 is an irrefutable classic. There are problems with it but for the most part, it is a classic game that changed gaming. Sure, prior to the 3D debut of Mario and the gang there were other third dimension-based action adventures. The problem with those earlier titles is like pre-Halo First Person Shooters on console. Things changed when Nintendo threw the gauntlet down with Super Mario 64. Now a fan has fixed most of those problems and the game is even more impressive 20+ years after release.
One thing that was a problem with the 3D plumber’s adventures was the molasses feeling it had at times. Thanks to Kaze Emanuar fans can now enjoy Super Mario 64 in 60 frames per second action.
Just speeding up the game would not work that well as it would mess with the physics engine quite a bit. Don’t fret, Kaze has thought of that and worked out the problems this would cause and fixed them.
He has also improved the problems with crashes involved in collecting all the stars, fixed animations, and fixed the blinking when you receive damage.
Now for the bad. You will not get to enjoy this romhack on the actual hardware. This is because the Nintendo 64 was barely able to manage the game at 20 to 30 frames per second. Sure, later games were able to blow Super Mario 64 out of the water visually, not many were able to do so without the RAM Expansion Pak that Nintendo made available.
This is only enjoyable on a PC with the right emulators. That entails HD visuals, better sound, romhacks such as what Kaze has implemented, and save states.
Maybe if Nintendo ever releases a Nintendo 64 Classic Mini then fans will get to enjoy Kaze’s work on as close to “official” hardware as possible.
