If you were a gamer in the early 90’s that only played on computers, then you missed out on the best versions of Street Fighter II. Plain and simple. It is no secret that the computer ports of Capcom’s arcade 1 on 1 fighter were lackluster at best. Most were published by US Gold or Hi-Tech Expressions for those wanting to point their anger somewhere. While it was a foregone conclusion, even before they started, the Commodore 64 version is probably the weakest of the computer line-up of Street Fighter II releases. One fan from Spain is aiming to correct that. No small feat considering started learning C64 Assembly less than half a decade ago.
Shown at the Explora Commodore event in Barcelona Spain in May 2018, the new renovated Commodore 64 version of Street Fighter II turned more than a few heads. The demo on the show floor was limited to two characters (Ryu and Ken) and one stage (Dhalsim’s). According to our friends at Reto Game Network, there is currently no distribution method decided upon for this re-port of Street Fighter II on the Commodore 64.
That won’t stop us from following the continued development though. Seriously, out of 12 fighters, having two at the ready for a demo already is a good sign. Now, if the developer can eek out enough power, and storage, to get all 12 fighters into the final build is another story.
What we can see already is that great attention to detail is going into the background graphics. Dhalsim’s elephants and background tapestry look quite good already. This gives me good feelings that this port is going to be handled with the utmost care.
Now, if Capcom stops it or not is another story. Other companies are quite active in stopping these projects towards the end of development (companies such as Nintendo).
