Fan Porting Shadow of the Beast to Nintendo Entertainment System

Shadow of the Beast

If you are scratching your head at that headline then don’t worry, I am sure you are not alone. Shadow of the Beast, a franchise that was quite impressive back in the day, started life on the Commodore Amiga computer and later saw ports for many platforms. The Super Nintendo is the only Nintendo platform to see a port of the original game under the name Super Shadow of the Beast. Why? Because back in the day of the SNES it was apparently a requirement to put “super” in front of game titles. Anyhow, a fan is porting Shadow of the Beast to the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System. Yep. The original NES.

While graphically the NES port is not going to hold a candle to the 16-bit versions, it is still impressive that the 8-bit NES is even capable. Even a little bit.

There is a bit of help under the hood for this port. This is a port that is not running on a stock Nintendo NES. Nope.

The MMC3 (Memory Management Controller #3) chip helping the 8-bit Nintendo out. Nothing wrong with that.

Nintendo did it back in the day with Super Mario Bros 2 and 3 and Kirby’s Adventure to name a couple. This chip also assisted in making Mega Man 3, 4, 5, and 6 possible.

Psygnosis, an acquisition of Sony, is obviously not interested in porting Shadow of the Beast to the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System but that has not stopped fans. There is no way to tell if there will be an inevitable cease and desist letter sent out – hopefully not as this looks impressive already.

Currently the fan port of Shadow of the Beast is not much more than the main character running around a rather barren game world. There is evidence of parallax scrolling and some impressive, for 8-bit NES, use of color as well.
