The Myst franchise is currently making a comeback on Kickstarter. Cyan have secured the rights to all seven games, even the ones they did not make, in the franchise and have collected them together for the first time. Not only that, they have also gone through with working with industry veterans to make all seven games work on the latest Windows and MacOS editions available.
Myst 25th Anniversary Collection is quite a feat in development. Not only because they are working with CodeWeavers (MacOS versions) and GoG.com (Windows versions) to update the franchise but just the sheer size of the undertaking. We are talking hurdle after hurdle to get these games updated and working again.
The thing about Myst is, it transcended gaming. People that were not gamers knew about the game, still do. 25 years later and the Myst style adventure is still going strong with independent developers. That speaks volumes for just how far ahead of its time the original Cyan game was.
There are some cool touchie feelies available only to Kickstarter backers too.
Gehn’s Inkwell and Pen along with the Linking Book (a couple of versions depending on backer level) are the “go to” collectors pieces here. While they will surely end up on eBay, I doubt it will be without a heavy heart from the ardent fan.
Point and click adventures took a turn for the better when Myst was released. For the most part, prior to Cyans classic, adventure games were mostly third person affairs. They were also often viewed from the side – oftentimes making it tough to get engrossed in the world and not feel like a spectator.
Myst changed that. Myst put you in the world.
That was the biggest accomplishment that Cyan had with Myst, at least that is what the media ran with. It certainly was a good hook to get gamers into the world – the story and the world itself kept them there.
Myst is currently kicking butt on Kickstarter so if you want one of those touchies, you better hurry.
If you miss out on the Kickstarter, or just want a specific game from the franchise to complete your collection then check eBay or checking Amazon
