Who does not like a good old-fashioned dungeon crawl? If you are tired of the traditional grid-based gameplay then you will want to check out Crypt of Dracula. It takes the traditional view point and modifies it a bit.
Crypt of Dracula is a remake of an older title, Tomb of Dracula, for the Sinclair ZX81 (released in 1980). I don’t blame you if you have never heard of the original title.
Crypt of Dracula is being developed by Twitter user, Matteusbeus – who along with many of the development team on this game is former Watermelon developers. More on my take on Watermelon in another article.
Graphically Crypt of Dracula is a unique title for the Sega Genesis – consoles in general – as I don’t have much in that realm to compare it to. The closest I can think of is those old point and click adventures that saw release on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Games like Déjà vu, Shadowgate, and UnInvited are close to what you can expect with Crypt of Dracula. At least based on what I can derive from the available information that Matteusbeus has made available.
From the above embedded video, you can see that you have time to think in battles, in rooms, and multiple directions you can go through the levels. This is a little more involved than what we saw in games like Shadowgate but the execution is similar.
Graphically, Crypt of Dracula is pulling on the nostalgia strings with visuals that seem to be around the end of the first generation of Sega Genesis games. A time when developers were still figuring out the hardware and what type of games would do well.
This was a period when experimentation was high, and we got varied takes on classic genres. Sword of Vermillion was unique within the burgeoning role-playing world for instance.
Crypt of Dracula is scheduled to make an appearance at this years Retro Revival event.
