It was inevitable that Sega would want in on the action that Nintendo has created with their Classic Mini consoles. That brings us to a tweet from Sega of Japan saying they are releasing a Mega Drive Mini (Sega Genesis Mini in the United States). There are a couple of concerns to be had here. This is Sega after all.

Before you get all giddy and excited about the Sega Genesis Mini having Sonic the Hedgehog 3, forget it. The music licensing is apparently not sorted out (i.e., someone wants more money than Sega is willing to spend).

Not sure why no one has replaced the music in this game like they have done with other titles over the years but whatever. This is Sega.

Over on the AtGames Flashback Zone Facebook page the fans are asking questions, and to their credit, AtGames (or someone there) is answering “some” questions. Fans are answering the others.

For instance, the underlying hardware will apparently be the same across all regions.

One fan asked how the Sega Genesis Mini will differ from the HD Flashback console released last year. The response was “Different emulation, additional features, etc.”

Please tell me they are doing something beyond just another system on a chip with crappy sound. I mean, how many times can they get away with that crap and enough fans buy it to make it profitable to DO IT AGAIN and AGAIN.

The list of games to be included is not available, other than knowing that Sonic 3 is not going to be one of them. If history has served to tell us anything it is that we will probably see the same games on this as we have seen on Sega Genesis Collection or Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection. Cannot forget the crap “bonus” games that AtGames is known for so they can pad the final game count.
