Since Konami has all but turned their backs on retro gaming fans, it is up those same fans to keep the spirit alive. One such fan has taken it upon themselves to update the 8-Bit Nintendo Entertainment System version of Castlevania with new graphics, well somewhat new, and better sound.
This updated Castlevania is not going to run on a flash cart on actual hardware so don’t bother trying. Okay?
Now that I have burst the bubble of most reading this article, let’s discuss the fun stuff.
Graphically, this is an impressive hack. What has been accomplished here is an interesting mix of old and new. A lot of the graphics are from the MSX version of the game which predated the Famicom (Japan’s NES) version.
Just check out the animated GIF above for a good idea of the updates. Then head over to ROMHacking.net and grab the patch.
Before you leave though, please note that you will need the Mesen emulator (version 0.9.5 or newer) to play this update.

How about a link to the mod? I searched Romhacking.net and couldn’t find any Castlevania patch that does what you describe and show in your pictures. In fact, the title screen you have chosen, Castlevania – Opposing Bloodlines” replaces bosses in the game, and is not a complete graphic overhaul like your bottom image.
