What is holding you back from owning your very own arcade machine? Time? Money? General ability to follow through on new ventures such building an arcade machine? Well, Tastemakers are going to change that for you later this year with their Arcade1Up Do-It-Yourself option for arcade machine lacking fans out there.
“Players will be able to relive the 80s and 90s and get the joy of playing these games in a form that they were meant to be experienced”, said Scott Bachrach, CEO/President, Tastemakers. “These arcade-inspired cabinets will be the perfect affordable addition to anyone’s home or office space.”
Tastemakers will show their line of Arcade1Up machines at this years New York Toy Fair (booth #6372) and retail later this year for $399 each.
What do you get for your money? Your choice between five cabinets, each will contain four classic arcade games. So far, the only titles that have been mentioned are Street Fighter II, Atari’s Asteroids, Centipede, and Missile Command. Leave it to Atari to rent their name or games out to anyone with enough cash as they are with the Atari Token crypocurrency.
Each Arcade1Up machine will be about four feet tall, consumer grade arcade-style machines. Considering they are claiming “same gameplay as the originals” I can only assume they will be using MAME or similar emulation program to recreate these games on the 17-inch LED screen.
Currently there are no pictures available of the Arcade1Up machines so we will just have to use our imagination on what they look like. Considering they are “easily assembled” I must take it that these are “do-it-yourself” kit project. I personally see nothing wrong with kit projects as they allow for customization and uniqueness to be introduced into the build.
We will have to wait for a little while longer to find out about these units, what specific games are on each, if they are expandable in any way, etc. Keep an eye on Arcade1Up.com just in case something pops up.
